Adho Mukha Vrikshasana
Downward Facing Tree

Foundations of Posture:
  • If you have never practice Handstand Posture, begin by using a wall for support.
  • Come into Adho Mukha Svanasana (Downward Dog). If you are using a wall for support, finger tips are right against the wall.
  • Keeping the action in the upper body begin to walk one foot in a few inches (this is your base leg) so the opposite foot is your swing leg.
  • Press down into your palms, engage your abdominal muscles and raise your swing leg up over your head or until it meets a wall - base leg follows.
  • Keep pressing down into your palms and drawing the shoulder blades onto your back.  Squeeze the legs together and reach though the soles of your feet (feet are flexed).
  • To release: Engage your abdominal muscles and lower down one leg at a time.  Rest in child pose for a few minute before moving.
